From President Barack Obama down the ladder of liberal Democrats, they have worked long and hard to persuade the American people that assault-style rifles are evil and should be banned from sales and ownership. Everyone keeps referring to the shootings of all the school kids and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School, but they fail to tell you that the only assault-style weapon found in the vicinity was in the trunk of a car and was never used in the shootings.
Even US Attorney General Eric Holder has joined the crusade to ban assault-style weapons. He claims they are nothing more than tools of mass killing, forgetting reports of ordinary citizens using them for self-defense.
But a new study conducted by Holder’s Department of Justice proves Holder and Obama wrong and completely undermines their anti-gun campaign. The National Institute of Justice, a research arm of the DOJ released: ‘Summary of Select Firearm Violence Prevention Strategies.’ The report is dated Jan. 4, 2013 and bears the name of Deputy Director Dr. Greg Ridgeway.
The study states that there are around 11,000 homicides a year involving firearms. Of those, they identified only 35 fatalities that are the result of mass shootings (4 or more victims at a given time and place). That means that mass shooting only account for 0.032% or one-third of one percent of all gun homicides.
The document then looked at ways being used to reduce gun violence and how effective they are. The first method they looked at is gun buybacks. Here is what the report said on gun buybacks:
“Gun buybacks are ineffective as generally implemented. 1. The buybacks are too small to have an impact. 2. The guns turned in are at low risk of ever being used in a crime. 3. Replacement guns are easily acquired. Unless these three points are overcome, a gun buyback cannot be effective.”
The report then cites the 1997 Australian national gun buyback program and it resulted in a dramatic increase in gun violence in the country.
Next the study looked at the impact of large capacity magazines. Although it does say that they have been used in nearly 25% of all crime in 1993 that the effect of banning them from 1994 to 2004 has proven useless in the past:
“In five cities studied closely found no change in the criminal use of large capacity magazines during the ten year ban.”
The report then moves on to issues of ammunition logs and background checks. Ammunition logs have been used to identify owners of illegal guns or owners who are not legally allowed to own a gun. Background checks have also been effectively used to catch people who are not legally allowed to own a firearm.
When the report came to the topic of assault weapons (a misnomer being used by the federal government), the report stated:
“Assault weapons are not a major contributor to gun crime. The existing stock of assault weapons is large, undercutting the effectiveness of bans with exemptions… a complete elimination of assault weapons would not have a large impact on gun homicides… Since assault weapons are not a major contributor to US gun homicide and the existing stock of guns is large, an assault weapon ban is unlikely to have an impact on gun violence. If coupled with a gun buyback and no exemptions then it could be effective.”
Finally, the report looked at ‘smart guns.’ These are guns that have a built in technology that only allows the owner to fire the gun. The purpose is intended to reduce child accidental shooting and from police officers being shot with their own guns. Their conclusion read:
“The development of the technology has focused on making the guns child-proof or providing law enforcement officers with a firearm that could not be used against them. The realization of this technology would not prevent such shootings perpetrated by the owners of the guns involved. In addition this would not eliminate the illicit market, but rather alter it. There would remain an illicit market for guns that did not have this technology installed or for smart guns in which the technology had been neutralized.”
According to the DOJ’s own study, banning assault (assault-style) weapons and pushing gun buybacks have little to no effect on reducing gun violence. They don’t want the American people to know these facts and the study conducted by Holder’s DOJ. They will hide it from us as best they can.
Liberal media outlets will also use their powers to suppress the truth by refusing to air pro-gun ads. Case in point is Clear Channel radio who refused to run the following ad:
That leaves only one reason why the Obama administration and liberal mainstream media are pushing so hard to push this legislation through – to disarm the American people one step at a time. They are going to find out that their agenda will be met with resistance and blood shed as Americans all across the land stand up to the tyranny of the federal government and defend their Second Amendment rights to own and bear arms without being infringed upon. The words of the ad above are about to ring loud and true.
